Strumming 101: Hand Posture

Get Adobe Flash player

Strumming Posture:

Your strumming hand/arm should be relaxed and able to move naturally. The motion for strumming should come from a combination of wrist and arm. This combination is important, and you should avoid using one or the other exclusively. To get an idea of the basic strumming motion, imagine that you have a drop of water on your hand. Now try to shake that drop of water off. This is very similar to the motion you will use when strumming the guitar.

2 common postures for strumming:

- hand open and relaxed

- hand closed in a loose, relaxed fist
